How We Review Cat Food Brands

You and your cat have very different tastes. You may open a can of cat food and turn up your nose at the sight while your cat starts drooling and pawing at you to put it down for him.

Though your tastes might not align with your cat’s, it’s your responsibility as a cat owner to understand them. Not only does your cat have unique preferences, but he has specific nutritional needs that must be met if you want him to live a long and healthy life.

Cats are obligate carnivores, so that’s where we start when evaluating cat food brands. Any recipe we recommend will start with a real source of quality animal protein as the first ingredient. Ideally, we’d like to see two or three sources of protein within the top 5 ingredients. We’d never recommend a product that starts with a carbohydrate ingredient, especially one like corn, wheat, or soy.

Though protein is the most important ingredient in your cat’s diet, there are other nutrients to consider as well. Cats require a balance of healthy fats as well as other essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals. The quality of the ingredients that provide these nutrients is very important.

We don’t want to simply convince you to agree with our opinion of any cat food we review. Rather, it’s our goal to give you the background and insight you need to make your own educated decision. After all, it’s your responsibility as a cat owner to provide for your cat’s nutritional needs. In order to make a healthy choice for your cat, you must know what those needs are and how well a product meets them.

Here are some of the things we look for in a good cat food brand:

      • High-quality animal protein as the first ingredient
      • Rich in healthy animal fats (ex: chicken fat or salmon oil)
      • Few to no carbohydrate ingredients (especially within the top 5)
      • Limited number of main ingredients plus supplements
      • No low-quality fillers, grains, or by-products

In addition to making sure any cat food brand we recommend is made with high-quality ingredients, we evaluate several other factors as well. We prefer brands that offer a wide variety of recipes and those that provide plenty of information about their ingredients and products. We also consider pricing and recalls as well as the availability of the brand as a whole.

      Overview of the Soulistic Brand

The Soulistic brand of cat food is designed to “feed your cat’s soul.” This brand was founded with the goal of crafting a better cat food that delivers unmatched quality and value for finicky felines. They use only the highest quality ingredients to make sure your cat gets the very best.

Soulistic is a Petco-exclusive brand which means they only sell in Petco stores and on the Petco website, though you can also find their products on Chewy. Though Petco is responsible for distributing the product, Soulistic cat food is actually made by Weruva, a family-owned company based in the United States. They are best known for their premium wet cat food products.

Not only does Soulistic strive to produce high-quality cat foods, but they seek to address the four most common issues cat owners face:

      • Pickiness or refusal to eat
      • Weight management
      • Proper hydration
      • Urinary tract health

Each of their recipes addresses one or more of these common issues to help ensure your cat gets the nutrition he needs and the quality he deserves. Soulistic cat foods are made in a human food facility that maintains top level certifications by the British Retail Consortium (BRC). All of their tuna is wild-caught and both sea turtle- and dolphin-safe.

What Kind of Cat Food Products Do They Offer?

The Soulistic brand only offers wet cat food at the moment. They offer a number of Original Recipes in both cans and pouches, featuring thick cuts of high-quality proteins like white breast meat chicken and lean fish loins. If your cat prefers a smooth texture, the Pate line offers a variety of choices.

Soulistic also offers a number of Moist & Tender options in both cans and pouches. These recipes feature tender protein in a rich gravy, formulated to help keep your cat hydrated. There’s also a dedicated line of Kitten products in cans and pouches designed specifically for the nutritional needs of growing kittens to be high in protein, moderate in fat content, and low in carbs.

      Product Recall History

When you purchase a can or bag of cat food, you’re putting your trust in the brand that the product is safe for you and for your cat. Though you can’t always believe everything pet food manufacturers put on their labels, you can at least trust that their products aren’t dangerous – or so you hope.

The truth is accidents happen more often than you’d like to believe when it comes to pet food manufacturing. Fortunately, the FDA plays a role in protecting consumers by regulating certain aspects of the pet food industry including labeling requirements and food safety.

If the FDA becomes aware of a problem with a product, either through their own testing or through consumer complaints, they have the authority to recall the product – to remove it from pet store shelves. A manufacturer can also issue a voluntary recall if they become aware of the product themselves. Recalls can happen for a variety of reasons ranging from simple labeling or formulation errors to more serious issues like contamination with food-borne pathogens.

When evaluating a cat food brand, it’s important to consider the brand’s recall history. A brand with a long list of recalls may not be one you want to trust with your cat’s health, but a brand without any recalls isn’t necessarily a high-quality brand for that reason alone.

The Soulistic brand has never been recalled, so that’s good news. Though sold exclusively by Petco, the brand is made by Weruva. Weruva has a single recall in its history which happened in 2017 and affected their Best Feline Friend (B.F.F.) line of cat foods. These foods were made exclusively for the Australian market and were recalled due to insufficient levels of thiamine.

Soulistic Moist & Tender Salmon Dinner in Gravy Canned Food

      Type of Food: Dry

      • First 5 Ingredients: Fish broth, salmon, tuna, tapioca starch, natural flavor
      • Guaranteed Analysis: 8% protein, 2% fat, 1% fiber, 84% moisture
      • Calories per Cup: 912 kcal/kg
      • Price Per Pound/Ounce: $0.43/ounce

      Ingredients:

Fish Broth, Salmon, Tuna, Tapioca Starch, Natural Flavor, Sunflower Oil, Guar Gum, Celery Powder, Calcium Sulfate, Taurine, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Salt, Vitamin E Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Niacin Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Vitamin A Supplement, Manganese Sulfate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Copper Amino Acid Complex, Riboflavin Supplement (Vitamin B2), Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6).

This Moist & Tender Salmon Dinner recipe comes in 3-ounce cans, packed in a savory gravy full of flavor. Though salmon is the name of the recipe, it also contains tuna as a primary source of protein.

We’re glad to see fresh salmon and tuna as two of the top three ingredients and we’re not worried that water comes before the protein – this is fairly common in wet pet foods. The only other main ingredients are the tapioca starch and sunflower oil.

Tapioca starch is a grain-free, gluten-free carbohydrate typically used as a thickener in pet foods. Unfortunately, it doesn’t provide much in the way of nutritional value but, that being said, it isn’t an inherently bad ingredient. We’d prefer to see an animal-based source of fat, but the sunflower oil is likely included as a source of omega-6s to balance out the omega-3s from the fish.

Overall, this appears to be a decent recipe, though we wouldn’t mind seeing a few natural sources for key nutrients to help shorten the list of synthetic supplements at the end.

Soulistic Originals Pure Bliss Tuna Whole Meat Dinner in Gravy Canned Cat Food

      Type of Food: Dry

      • First 5 Ingredients: Tuna, fish broth, tapioca starch, sunflower seed oil, tricalcium phosphate
      • Guaranteed Analysis: 12% protein, 1.5% fat, 0.5% fiber, 84% moisture
      • Calories per Cup: 72 kcal/3 oz. can
      • Price Per Pound/Ounce: $0.43/ounce

      Ingredients:

Tuna, Fish Broth, Tapioca Starch, Sunflower Seed Oil, Tricalcium Phosphate, Calcium Lactate, Xanthan Gum, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Nicotinic Acid (Vitamin B3), Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Manganese Proteinate, Vitamin A Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Riboflavin Supplement (Vitamin B2), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Folic Acid, Copper Sulfate, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source Of Vitamin K), Vitamin D3 Supplement.

This formula is a little truer to the name which describes “tuna whole meat.” Tuna is, in fact, the first ingredient and appears to be the sole source of protein in this formula. We’re also happy to see that it comes first before the water in this recipe.

Like the previous recipe, this formula contains tapioca starch and sunflower seed oil as the other main ingredients aside from the protein. Again, neither of these is a bad ingredient on its own but tapioca starch offers little nutritional value and sunflower seed oil isn’t an animal-based fat.

We’re happen to note that Soulistic makes some use of chelated mineral supplements. These are simply minerals that have been chemically bound to protein molecules which increases their absorption.

Soulistic Originals Shrimply Divine Tuna & Shrimp Dinner in Gelee Canned Cat Food

      Type of Food: Dry

      • First 5 Ingredients: Fish broth, tuna, shrimp, sunflower seed oil, locust bean gum
      • Guaranteed Analysis: 10% protein, 1.5% fat, 0.5% fiber, 84% moisture
      • Calories per Cup: 60 kcal/3 oz. can
      • Price Per Pound/Ounce: $0.43/ounce

      Ingredients:

Fish Broth, Tuna, Shrimp, Sunflower Seed Oil, Locust Bean Gum, Carrageenan, Calcium Lactate, Guar Gum, Tricalcium Phosphate, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Sulfate, Nicotinic Acid (Vitamin B3), Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Manganese Proteinate, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Riboflavin Supplement (Vitamin B2), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Folic Acid, Copper Sulfate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Menadione Sodium.

This Shrimply Devine recipe features a combination of tuna and shrimp. As promised in the name, both fresh tuna and shrimp appear as main ingredients – they are second and third, following the water.

This recipe also includes sunflower seed oil as a primary ingredient and an added source of fat. Again, it’s likely used to help balance out the omega-3 and omega-6 content in the recipe which is beneficial for your cat’s skin and coat health. Fish like tuna is rich in omega-3s while sunflower oil has omega-6s.

The difference between this recipe and the previous is the use of locust bean gum, carrageenan, and guar gum as thickeners instead of the tapioca starch.

This is a bit of a concern because there is some evidence to suggest carrageenan has been linked to negative health effects in cats. Some of the other Soulistic recipes sport a “carrageenan free” note on the label, so it’s possible Soulistic is moving away from the use of this ingredient.

Soulistic Luna Tuna Tuna Dinner in Pumpkin Soup Pouches

      Type of Food: Wet

      • First 5 Ingredients: Tuna, fish broth, pumpkin, tapioca starch, sunflower seed oil
      • Guaranteed Analysis: 9% protein, 1.4% fat, 0.5% fiber, 85% moisture
      • Calories per Cup: 65 kcal/3 oz.
      • Price Per Pound/Ounce: $0.43/ounce

      Ingredients:

Tuna, Fish Broth, Pumpkin, Tapioca Starch, Sunflower Seed Oil, Calcium Lactate, Tricalcium Phosphate, Xanthan Gum, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Nicotinic Acid (Vitamin B3), Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Manganese Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement (Vitamin B2), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Folic Acid, Copper Sulfate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source Of Vitamin K), Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement.

This Luna Tuna recipe is unique from the others in that it is cooked in pumpkin soup rather than gravy. Pumpkin is a rich source of fiber for pets which can help with digestion and the fact that it’s a soup means it’s high in moisture, another benefit.

We’re happy to see tuna as the first ingredient in this recipe and it appears to be the only source of animal protein. Some customers have commented on the use of proteins not listed in the recipe name, but this formula seems to be aptly named.

Though this recipe includes pumpkin, the fiber and carbohydrate content are still very low. The estimated carbohydrate content is under 3%. We always prefer cat foods under 10% carbohydrates at the maximum, so we’re very happy with this.

Soulistic Originals Autumn Bounty Chicken Dinner in Pumpkin Soup Pouches

      Type of Food: Wet

      • First 5 Ingredients: Chicken, chicken broth, pumpkin, tapioca starch, sunflower seed oil
      • Guaranteed Analysis: 9% protein, 1.4% fat, 0.5% fiber, 85% moisture
      • Calories per Cup: 61 kcal/3 oz.
      • Price Per Pound/Ounce: $0.43/ounce

      Ingredients:

Chicken, Chicken Broth, Pumpkin, Tapioca Starch, Sunflower Seed Oil, Calcium Lactate, Tricalcium Phosphate, Xanthan Gum, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Nicotinic Acid (Vitamin B3), Ferrous Sulfate, Manganese Proteinate, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement (Vitamin B2), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Copper Sulfate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Potassium Iodide, Sodium Selenite, Biotin.

Similar to the previous recipe, this formula is cooked in pumpkin soup rather than gravy. The calorie content as well as the protein, fat, and fiber content are similar to the previous recipe – the main difference is the primary ingredient is chicken rather than tuna.

Again, we’re happy to see this is a single source protein recipe. Tapioca starch is used as a thickener along with xanthan gum, though this formula is carrageenan free. It’s also completely free from gluten and grains which can be good news for cats with sensitivities.

What Do Customers Think of Soulistic Cat Food?

When shopping for cat food, it’s nearly impossible to predict how your cat will react to it. Cats tend to be picky eaters and you could purchase a different cat food in the same flavor as one he loves just to have him turn up his nose. This is where it’s sometimes helpful to consider what other customers say.

Because Soulistic is a Petco-exclusive brand, we were really only able to find customer reviews on the Petco website. The majority of the recipes had a 4-star average rating or higher and the variety packs seemed to be very popular.

Some of the comments customers have made about Soulistic cat food include positive notes about the high moisture level and appealing flavor. There are some concerns, however, about ingredients not being mentioned in the recipe name. For example, the Soulistic Moist & Tender Chicken Dinner in Gravy contains tuna which could be an issue for cats with fish allergies.

How Much Does Soulistic Cat Food Cost?

Cat food pricing ranges greatly across the board. Though cost is often correlated with quality, you can’t use the price of cat food alone as an indicator. It’s a good idea to have some kind of budget in mind when you start shopping and then choose the highest quality brand you can within your price range.

All of the recipes we reviewed from Soulistic average around $0.43/ounce. This makes Soulistic more affordable than many cat food brands on the market, but they definitely aren’t the cheapest. Pricing may depend on the recipe and you’re likely to find sales on this brand since it’s Petco-exclusive.

To give you a better idea how Soulistic stacks up against other cat food brands, here is a quick chart to show you some average prices:

Where Can You Buy Soulistic Cat Food?

While price is certainly an important factor to consider when shopping for cat food, you also want to think about how easy the brand is to find. Some brands you can find everywhere from national pet store chains to grocery stores and discount stores. Others are only sold in specialty pet food stores.

Because Soulistic is a Petco-exclusive brand, Petco is the best place to find it. You can shop in stores or online at Petco stores and other related retailers like Pet Coach and Unleashed. You may also be able to find some Soulistic products on Amazon from individual sellers.

Our Final Thoughts: Is Soulistic a Good Brand?

Overall, we’re happy with the Soulistic cat food brand. Not only is it very affordably priced under $0.50 per ounce, but they use quality proteins and their formulas are rich in moisture and flavor. If you’re looking for a brand that offers a wide variety and is easy to find at major pet stores, Soulistic is definitely one worth considering.
